WORKSHOPS

Some of these workshops will have a limit to numbers due to the space available in rehearsal spaces.  Where space is at a premium, once registrations have closed, on April 4th we will open a class preregistration so we can make sure safe and comfortable numbers are in each class.  But for now have a browse and see what you might like to try.

Body of Work
An intermediate level class where you will be learning dances from some of MJ’s classic Limbs body of work
If you loved Limbs Dance Company this is a unique way to get inside some of the works and experience them for yourself…a great dance challenge in the present to visit these works from the past
We will be warming up with a contemporary/ballet class then move on to MJ’s works from the early Limbs years - such as Talking Heads, Reptile, Shark Attack, the Women’s dance in Games (they will be revisited to suit our mature bodies!!)
Each class will be taught as a stand-alone class – we will do the same warm up then learn different dances each time

Rawiri Hindle (Ngati Kurī)
Maori embodied knowledge in Dance Education
Rawiri works in Māori performing arts and wellbeing education with a strong emphasis on culturally responsive embodied knowledge.
He is offering back-to-back workshops over a 2-hour period. Te neke o Ngā Atua explores the movement of the Māori Gods or Elemental forces. Karanga atu, Karanga mai examines 3 stages of the karanga (the call and respond when visitors come on to the marae): Whakatau (Welcome, to settle…), Tangi (to grieve) and Kaupapa (the reason for the gathering together). These concepts within the karanga become the motivation and starting point for the dance. These workshops encourage collaboration and the application of movement, voice, sound, reo, and gesture.

Dancing words right off the page
No maximum class number.
Hear the music and feel the shape of some tiny poems, some with no meaning at all. Read them in 1,000 different ways. Marry phrases and feeling, movement and meaning. Work backwards too, finding words within movement. A playful session that will stir up your love of poetry and maybe kindle a desire to write.

Seeing and Being Seen.
As we age in today’s society we can lose our visibility. But the Crone is responsible for keeping the world turning with her wisdom, wit and  a sprinkling of wickedness.
Through the medium of Open Floor creative dance we will celebrate our Crone energies with each other with passion, laughter  and creativity. We will show ourselves and witness each other’s beauty in this amazing, aging body that can still express oneself through the love of dance.

Open Floor is a form of creative dance that provides an exploration of free movement and of oneself through dance. There are no steps to learn. You are encouraged to tune into your body and stay present, fully experiencing each moment as we move, breathe, and dance, with great music and a teacher to guide us. In this practice of embodiment, we harness the magic of the myriad ways that the heart, mind and body communicate, often without us realising. There is a growing acknowledgement that these 3 parts of self are all connected and are in constant communication with one another. If we pay attention to each, and deeply listen, we can gain useful insight and understanding which can enable growth.

‘Deakin Dances ‘– works by Val Deakin
In her more than 75 years dancing , teaching and creating dances, Val Deakin has studied a wide range of dance styles and techniques and lived in several countries, all of which have resulted in a very varied body of work created by her.
Some of the constants in her work are musicality, attention to nuance, the relatedness of the people performing and the need for dance to be an expressive medium.
Several excerpts of her works in the vein of dance/theatre  will be taught at the workshop.
